The graph above is showing fuel oil consumption onboard a ferry between 2008 and 2010 carrying cars and passengers in the Norwegian waters.
The top black line in the graph shows the fuel oil consumption in 2008 before starting focusing on fuel oil savings. The variation in fuel oil consumption throughout the year is also visible.

In the year of 2009 the company started to focus on fuel oil consumption by manually measuring and logging data. Even though the registration of data was very much time consuming it still resulted in 4.2 % fuel oil reduction after analyzing the data and making countermeasures on how to operate the engines – how to sail the vessel most efficient. The fuel oil consumption is shown in Fig 1 as the middle blue graph
In March 2010 the ferry installed the new HMA fuel oil consumption calculation system. The HMA system does all the calculation automatically and presents the results, which can be seen in Fig 2, to the operators in an easy understandable context, resulting in quick countermeasures. The implementation of the HMA fuel oil consumption system resulted in an additional 5% fuel saving. The fuel oil consumption is shown in Fig 1 as the bottom green graph.
The HMA fuel oil consumption calculation system can be summarized as follows:
- Easy to install and user friendly through optimized mimics
- Cost optimized running of engines and vessel
- Considrable reduction of the fuel costs
- Cost calculation on a daily, weekly and, monthly basis
- Bill calculation per trip – optimized and exact through use of GPS
